Brown Rice, also known as Whole Grain Rice is the Rice Grain, of any type of Rice, that has been not been processed beyond removing the husk of the rice grain. This means that the brown Rice Bran and the Rice Germ are still attached to the grains and available to the consumer to provide its nutrition. Brown Rice is therefore the most nutritious preparation of the raw Rice grain.

The gains in nutrition come at the expense of cooking time, shelf life and texture. Brown Rice takes almost twice as long to cook as White Rice. Because of the oil in the Bran it goes bad more quickly (it keeps about 3 months in a pantry) and it is harder to chew than White Rice. White Rice and Converted Rice can be used in place of Brown Rice.
