A Filbert Nut is a type of Hazelnut and in practice, the word(s) ”Filbert or Filbert Nuts is sometimes used interchangeably for Hazelnuts. Filbert Trees are native to Southeastern Europe and Southwestern Asia.

Filberts have a hard outer shell which must be removed before use. The nut themselves also have a bitter outer skin that should also be removed.

Availability

Filbert Nuts are available year round.

Purchasing

When purchasing Filbert Nuts in the package, look for a “best before date” on bag, can or jar. If you can see the Filbert Nuts, the shell and nut should be plump and uniform in size. They should not be limp or squishy looking. You should not see any signs of moisture inside the bag or jar. When opened, or if buying from a bulk bin, the Filbert Nuts themselves should not smell musty or rancid. You should not see any mold or dark discolorations. Moldy Filbert Nuts should be avoided and/or discarded.

Storage

Most of us will be purchasing and using dried, blanched or roasted Filbert Nuts, in or out of the shell which will have good moisture levels but all Filbert Nuts, including dried or roasted Filbert Nuts, still have a high Fat content which can turn Rancid very easily if not properly stored away from heat and light. Keep your commercially purchased Filbert Nuts in a air tight container and stored in a cool dark place.

Culinary Uses

Filberts can be used Raw or Roasted/Cooked. Filbert Nuts are used primarily to round out the offering of mixed-nuts sold in cans but you can also find them in savory dishes like Lamb Stew or in Dessert and Baking recipes.

Blanching the Filbert Nut is an easy way to release the outer skin.
