Mulberries native to the Americas and Asia are edible but only the Red mulberry in the eastern United States is comparable to the Black mulberry.  Mulberry trees have been planted mostly on the Pacific Coast.

Somewhat resembling the Blackberry, a ripe mulberry is very soft and elongated Loganberry.

Season

Mulberries season falls in the Summer months.

Varieties

The color does not identify the fruit, as white mulberries can produce white, lavender or black fruit. White Mulberries, are usually very sweet and often lack a needed bit of tartness. Red Mulberries are generally deep red, nearly black, and have a flavor that almost equals the Black mulberry. Juicy and large, with a nice balance between sweet and tart, the black mulberry is the most flavorful, with a taste reminiscent of sweet Grapefruit.

Purchasing

When purchasing fresh whole Mulberries, look for Mulberries that are shiny, black/purple in color and are firm to the touch.

Storage

Store fresh whole Mulberries unwashed in the refrigerator. With most Berries, when stored with any surrounding moisture increases the decaying process dramatically.

Fresh Mulberries will last 2-4 days refrigerated and approximetly 1 year frozen.
