Capsicum annuum: This species contains by far the greatest number of Chile Peppers we are familiar with.  It includes both Sweet and Hot/Spicy varieties.  The name “annuum” is a misnomer, as it means “annual,” and Peppers are by nature perennials, though they are usually planted yearly and treated as annuals in order to produce the best quality Peppers.
