Hazelnuts (also known as a Cobnut) is the name given to any of the Nuts that grow on any of the types of Hazel Trees, which are a group of trees and large shrubs (members of the Birch family) found in the milder climates of the Northern Hemisphere.

The Celtic Druids believed that Hazelnuts conferred wisdom upon those who ate them. In fact, there is a story about a mythic pool surrounded by 9 Hazel trees which dropped their Nuts into the wisdom-giving pool. Salmon in the pool ate the nuts and were supposed to have absorbed the wisdom as well.

All Hazelnuts are edible but the Nuts from the Common Hazel Tree are the most commercially grown variety of Hazelnut. Filbert Nuts, which are a close cousin, are the second most widely used type of Hazelnut.  In some areas, the term Filbert Nut, which is a Hazelnut sub-species, is used interchangeably with Hazelnut.

Hazelnuts are available year round.

When purchasing Hazelnuts in the package, look for a “best before date” on bag, can or jar. If you can see the Hazelnuts, they should be plump and uniform in size. They should not be limp or squishy looking. You should not see any signs of moisture inside the bag or jar. When opened, or if buying from a bulk bin, the Hazelnuts themselves should not smell musty or rancid. You should not see any mold or dark discolorations. Moldy Hazelnuts should be avoided and/or discarded.

Most of us will be purchasing and using dried, blanched or roasted Hazelnuts, out of the shell which will have good moisture levels but all Hazelnuts, including dried or roasted Hazelnuts, still have a high Fat content which can turn Rancid very easily if not properly stored away from heat and light. Keep your commercially purchased Hazelnuts in a air tight container and stored in a cool dark place.
