Green Gooseberries grow on woody, perennial, deciduous shrubs that can reach a height of three to six feet. Other fruits called gooseberries include the "cape gooseberry", a native of the Andes, and the "Chinese gooseberry", better known as kiwifruit, native to China.

Gooseberries may be smooth, fuzzy or spiny, opaque, translucent, or white. The green gooseberry is a cousin to the currant berry and does not contain the husk or cape. Not consistent in size, they may be as big as a cherry tomato or as tiny as a blueberry. Inconsistent in flavor as well, gooseberries can be sour taste or slightly sweet. The sweetest berries are usually pinkish or purplish. Small to medium-size pale, green summer gooseberries and the large, yellow-green to purplish gooseberries are the varieties most often available in American markets. Crisp and highly acidic, these berries have a tight- fitting skin. The green gooseberry  is more likely to be found wild.

Season

Green Gooseberries are imported from New Zealand beginning February until mid-March. In the pacific northwest the Green Gooseberries are harvested only one month of the year, June.

Availability

Purchasing

Depending on the vendor, when purchasing fresh whole Green Gooseberries, look for Green Gooseberries that are either smooth/shiny or dull/fuzzy. Green Gooseberries should also be pale green in color, firm to the touch and round in shape.

Storage

Store fresh whole Green Gooseberries unwashed in the refrigerator. With most Berries, when stored with any surrounding moisture increases the decaying process dramatically.
