Technically, the Cereal Bowl is called a Soup-Cereal Bowl or an Oatmeal Bowl. It can also be called an All Purpose Bowl since it can be used, informally, for anything eaten with a Fork such as Salad, Bound Salads, Pasta, etc. or anything eaten with a Spoon like Soup or Cereal.

Cereal Bowls can have a Lip / Rim (Rimmed Cereal Bowl) or do without (Coupe Cereal Bowl). The guideline is that a Cereal Bowl should be slightly deeper and narrower than a Rimmed Soup Bowl and range from 5.75 inches to 8.75 inches in diameter.

Essentially, they are a casual bowl for almost all purposes and can be used for hot or cold foods. They are easily and understandably confused with Soup Bowls. If that works for you great. Just be aware that not all cereal bowls are Microwave-Safe or Oven-Safe. You should check the details yourself for any bowls at your house.
