The history of the waffle maker began in the 1300's, in the low countries. Today, the waffle maker is seldom used over a fire, and in most cases, it is a self-contained electrical appliance.  There are still some cast iron waffle makers in the old style which sit on a stove and must be manually flipped midway through the waffle’s cooking cycle.

Culinary Uses

A waffle iron is, simply, 2 iron plates with an indented waffle pattern hinged together meant to be used over a heat source (such as a fire or stove) to bake the Waffles.
