A Bread Plate, also known as a Bread & Butter Plate, typically measures 5 to 7 inches across and is the smallest plate in the traditional place setting. It is used to hold sliced bread, and butter, for an individual guest.

Culinary Uses

Bread Plates are often used in informal dinners, and at breakfast but are optional at a formal dinner. When the table is set, the Bread Plate is placed at the top left side of the place setting. They are usually cleared from the table before dessert is  served.

The Bread Plate may get confused with an Appetizer Plate, which is slightly larger in size. If you get confused, just remember that the Bread Plate is the smallest plate in the place setting.
