The Dinner Plate is the most common plate used for service as it is designed to hold the main course.

Typical Dinner Plates are 10 to 12 inches in diameter and can be used in conjunction with a Charger in formal place settings.

Culinary Uses

The Dinner Plate is used, after the Salad Course, to plate and serve the Main Course or Entrée. They are used for dinner and can be used for lunch as well,  though there is a Lunch Plate which is lighter and an inch smaller in diameter than a Dinner Plate. Dinner Plates can rest on top of a Charger.
