Marjoram is a familiar herb, often mistaken for its close relative, Oregano. Although both are members of the Mint family, they are distinctively different. In fact, marjoram has some Sage qualities. Its petite ovate leaves are thick and fuzzy and its flavor is delicate, almost Sage-like. Its chemical Its fresh leaves are more potent in flavor and aroma than dried.

Season

Marjoram is best in the Summer.

Availability

Marjoram is available year round.

Purchasing

When buying fresh Marjoram, the leaves should be dark green with no yellow or brown spots.  Dried Marjoram leaves will be more faded, but should still retain a little green color.

Storage

Fresh Marjoram will last about a week refrigerated. It can also be wrapped in foil and plastic and frozen for several months with little loss of flavor.

Culinary Uses

Marjoram has a strong, distinct flavor and should be used sparingly or in combination with cream-based Sauces and heavier Meats. Use fresh or dried, in Rubs and Seasonings.

Portion Size

Allow 1-2 t of Marjoram per recipe.
