The Mountain Papaya (Vasconcellea pubescens), also known as mountain pawpaw, looks like a Papaya, but is actually a different species than Carica papaya. The Mountain Papaya (of the genus Vasconcellea but also called Carica pubescens) is native to the Andes of South America. Mountain Papayas typically grow at altitudes over 4,900 feet (1500 meters).

Cultivation

Purchasing

Before buying Mountain Papaya, visually inspect the fruit. Don’t buy Mountain Papaya that has visible mold or mildew growing on the base where the stem was. Smell the base. You should be able to smell the scent of Mountain Papaya. If it smells bad or fermented, the fruit is bad. A few black spots on the skin won’t affect the taste of the Mountain Papaya but you should avoid overly bruised product.

Storage

Ripe cut Mountain Papayas should be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and used within 1 or 2 days. Store whole Mountain Papaya at room temperature. The fruit will keep for 1-2 weeks at room temperature, but are best used early.

Culinary Uses

The fruit pulp is edible, like the common Papaya, in fact, it is usually eaten raw or cooked.

Portion Size

Allow 1-2 oz of Mountain Papaya per person.
