Oregano is known botanically as Origanum vulgare. It is a member of the Mint family. As it is so closely related to Marjoram, it is referred to as wild Marjoram in many parts of Europe, but oregano and marjoram have their separate identities in the kitchen. Oregano is cultivated for both its fresh and dried leaves, although it loses much of its flavor and aroma in dried form.

Availability

Oregano is available all year long.

Purchasing

When buying fresh Oregano, the leaves should be dark green with no yellow or brown spots.  Dried Oregano leaves will be more faded, but should still retain a little green color.

Storage

Fresh Oregano will last about a week refrigerated. It can also be wrapped in foil and plastic and frozen for several months with little loss of flavor.

Culinary Uses

Oregano is mostly associated with Italian cooking, especially Tomato Sauces and Pizza.

It is also a ideal Aromatic for Meat Stews and can compliment Olive Oil sauces for Grilled and Baked Fish.
