A Solvent, is a material, typically a liquid, into which a Solute is poured and subsequently suspended to form a Solution.

Think about pouring salt into water to make a saline solution. In this example, the water is the Solvent, the salt is the solute and together they are a solution, specifically a saline solution. Solutions, such as saline are homogeneous mixtures because they have a uniform composition throughout. In the case of saline, the salt and water cannot be seen separately but together have the same form and appearance.
