Thyme is a robust herb that has a dainty appearance and offers a very unique taste.

Season

Thyme is best in the Spring through Fall.

Availability

Thyme is available year round.

Cultivation

Thyme has tiny rounded leaves that grow in clusters, around its thinly wooded stem. The leaves measure a mere 1/8 inch in diameter. Younger Thyme leaves are bright green and fade to grey-green, with age.

Varieties

Common Varieties of Thyme include - Garden Thyme, Wild Thyme, English Thyme, and French Thyme.

Purchasing

When buying fresh Thyme, the leaves should be green with no yellow or brown spots. Dried Thyme leaves will be more faded, but should still retain a little green color.

Storage

Fresh Thyme will last 1-2 weeks refrigerated. It can also be wrapped in foil, plastic wrap and frozen for 2-4 months with little loss of flavor.

Culinary Uses

Thyme's flavor counters its appearance. It delivers layers of woodsy, savory and Mint flavors. Thyme retains its flavor better than most herbs when dried, but fresh thyme is still preferred.

Thyme is used to season Stocks, Sauces and Soups. Thyme can be used as a stand alone herb or in savory combinations. Use to flavor Marinades with Sea Salt, Rosemary, Lemon Zest and Olive Oil.

Thyme releases its flavors slowly so it is favored in slow and long cooking application. Add to root vegetables and autumn fruits, or infuse in syrups and oils.

Portion Size

Allow 1-2 t of Thyme per recipe.
