A vitamin is an organic compound needed by the body to develop normally and grow.  Although essential fatty acids, minerals, and amino acids are all also essential for good health, they are not considered to be vitamins. 


There are 13 recognized vitamins including A, C, D, E, K and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, B-6, B-12, and folate.
